Bobtailing Hazards
Great West Casualty
Bobtailing presents many unique
hazards. For instance, a truck's braking system is designed to stop
the truck while pulling a loaded trailer. Without a trailer, braking
may cause the drive axle wheels to bounce, thus reducing gripping
action on the road. Try following these simple safety tips when
bobtailing a tractor. They could help you avoid an accident.
• Slow
down; the faster your travel, the longer it takes to stop
• Increase your
normal following distance by at least 50%
• Increase
following distance even more on wet roads
• Scan the road
ahead to identify potential traffic hazards
• Scan your
mirrors every four to six seconds for other vehicles
• Check for
vehicles in your blind spots before changing lanes
• On exit ramps,
slow down well below the posted speed limit
• Watch for loose
gravel when exiting the road into a parking lot
Keep in mind, there are
many hazards associated with driving a tractor without a trailer. By
following these simple rules, you could help avoid an accident and
keep your vehicle on the road.

• 20 minutes:
Play frisbee with your kids. Aerobic exercise stimulates the brain to
produce endorphins that make us feel good.
• 10 minutes:
Try meditation. Close your eyes and
imagine a calming scene. Relax your body and breathe deeply.
• 1 minute:
Light a vanilla or peppermint scented
candle. These two scents have been found to reduce stress and boost
energy levels.

Idle Time
We all have a vested interest in being able
to control our idle time. Some drivers moving into new tractors have
never been exposed to a Tri-pac unit. Tri-pac units were added to our
vehicles in an effort to reduce our idle time as well as meet EPA
Clean Air standards. Many states have adopted no idle laws. Having
the Tri-pac operating correctly will reduce idle times, fuel
consumption and help the environment.
If you have questions on operating the Tri-pac
or you are interested in knowing your idle time, please stop by the
shop or give me a call, I would enjoy discussing it with you.

For the month of
October fuel purchased at the terminal was
34.9%.
Be mindful that
there is a $.21 p/gal difference between a TA and our own fuel
tanks. Plan you fuel purchases such that you can get as much in
Mounds View or at the Pilot in Oak Creek as possible.
